Christian Yesashimwe's winning entry from last year showcases the repurposing of retired EV battery cells for powering electric cookers in refugee camps in Rwanda, which addresses both clean energy access and sustainable resource use.

Grab your cameras — it’s time for the annual DevEng Photography Contest!

Open to MDevEng students, PhD designated emphasis students, and now alumni, the contest is your opportunity to showcase what Development Engineering means to you through photography and video.

Submit up to three entries capturing something you’re working on — directly or indirectly — as part of your DevEng journey. This could be related to your internship, capstone project, current job, or any other relevant experience.

Winners, as judged by a panel of DevEng experts and professional photographers, will receive gift cards: $250 for first place and $100 for second place

We also typically celebrate our returning students with an exclusive DevEng party in the Fall, where we also announce the photo contest’s winners; we hope to continue that tradition this year!

Visual media are not just great for observing and documenting but are helpful for reflecting on your work. We also recommend keeping a written journal along with your photos and videos to add another layer of depth to your reflection process.

The submission deadline is August 26. Full contest details — including submission rules, a media-capture guide, and a media ethics guidelines — are available in the submission form. Check out the winning entries from 2024 and last year for inspiration.

We can’t wait to see your creativity in action!
